out of legends and stories comes the lengendary king arthur and his knights of the round table. sworn to protect the right and defend the wronged they flourished for many years growing rapidly in numbers and prowess. many stories abound about these famous knights a few of which involve the lady of the lake the queen guinevere sir lancelot of the lake and many other knights. the eventual downfall of the knights of the round table was the prophecy foretelling the finding of the holy grail; many knights never were heard from again and numbers were lost in the search through many lands for the grail. this weakened arthur s realm to such an extent that when one of his knights sir mordred attempted to revolt and claim the throne for himself the best of the order of the round table met their end in the final battle which also claimed the life of arthur himself. legends abound still though and many say that arthur never died but was merely taken away to be healed and would return again to save his country from trouble once more. this king arthur fantasy theme chess set does an excellent job of putting the legends into tangible form to do battle once more but this time in 64 squares! king arthur leads the red and orange themed pieces with queen guinevere at his side and the wizard merlin as the bishop supporting the king s other side. a dragon takes the knight s position and a fearsome addition to the battle it is indeed! rounding out arthur s army are his castle or the legendary city of camelot--where chivalry reigned supreme. and the pawns are all brave knights of the round table ready to defend their king and leader. sir mordred leads the blue and green themed pieces with the enchantress vivienne(also known as the lady of the lake) at his side. a wizard takes the position of bishop and a dragon also the position of knight. mordred s castle rises from the rook and provides support for the knights who support him. regardless whether king arthur is totally myth and legend or whether there was actually a real king arthur and even a round table--this set is soaked with legends; playing either side is going to be a great experience for the fortunates at the board! this is the chance to test the strength of merlin and the knights of the round table in the last battle! each piece is fashioned of plastic resin is hand-painted and non-weighted. dimensions: chess set pieces: 3-1/4" king s; 1-1/8" bases.
