Overpriced and Underfeatured relative to competitors
On the plus side, XP Home is decidedly
more stable than the 95/98/ME line
(though perhaps less so that 2000) and
offers excellent device (what widget
maker doesn't support Windows?) and game
support.
On the negative side, however, is much
more. Microsoft intentionally crippled
the software, leaving out or severely
limiting critical features like network
file sharing or anything that looks even
vaguely like a "server" feature (to
protect even higher margins on their
"higher end" operating systems).
Worse, they are pushing "management
services" into the infrastructure to
ensure you can't exercise your rights to
make backup copies, share personal
files, etc., on the assumption that most
of their customers are criminals. (Yes,
I received two threatening letters from
the Business Software Alliance, even
though I'm fastidious about license
compliance.)
Compared to the greater capability and
stability (not to mention lower price)
of products like Linspire, Mac OS X,
Suse, or Mandrake, the only rationale
for buying this product is if the game
or device you just HAVE to use runs only
with this product.
