<P>The IBM Ultrastar 18ES is a one-inch high low-profile hard disk drive that offers capacities of 18.2 gigabytes and 9.1 GB and average seek times as fast as 7.0 ms. And with the first implementation of giant magnetoresistive (GMR) head technology in a server-class drive, the Ultrastar 18ES provides an unprecedented areal density of 3.67 GB per disk. IBM has developed an integrated LSI chip that incorporates a microcomputer, hard disk controller, and flash memory in a single chip to help increase drive performance, reduce power usage, and enhance reliability. Other features include Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.), IBM Drive Temperature Indicator Processor (Drive-TIP), No-ID sector formatting, and the Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) digital data channel. </P>
